Newport News declares a double quarantine to curb fever fears with armed police guarding entrances and river tugboats patrolling. Outside the soldiers home no new cases. Phoebus reports one case while officials note eastern shore delegates lead or vie in the governor race as the GOP field solidifies with gold men on the platform.
The War Department released details from Manila dated July 31. The transport Grant sailed with 78 officers, 8 citizens, 1,353 soldiers and discharged men from the Wyoming North Dakota and Idaho units. About 200 discharged remained. many reenlisted. Corporal Frank Gore of Wyoming was the only sick soldier. The Minnesota regiment and other discharged men expect the next shipment soon. A cable from Gen Otis notes Transport Pennsylvania arrived with no casualties.
The dispatch boat Dolphin crashed into the ferry New York bound for Williamsburg. Both vessels suffered damage as tugs towed the New York to dock. Secretary Long was aboard the Dolphin.
The Salvation Army reports two prominent new recruits in New York City Miss Cora Van Norden daughter of Warner Van Norden president of the National Bank of North America and Miss Margaret Simpson daughter of Rev Mr Simpson president of the Christian Alliance Miss Van Norden is active in New York and Newport society and follows her sister Emma Van Norden who joined eight years ago.
Postmaster General and Mrs. Smith joined the presidential party for a several week stay at Hotel Champlain. Mrs. McKinley’s health improves as President McKinley and Postmaster General Smith plan to attend a golf tournament this afternoon.
Maryland Democrats set their state convention to convene tomorrow in Baltimore. Officials will nominate candidates for governor comptroller and attorney general. John Walter Smith leads with German support and solid backing from party members.
The Montreal stock market sank as panic spreads on August 1 with heavy margin sales and large lots dumped. Hochelaga Bank reports a reserve fund above $2,000,000 and says it can meet all demands. Bank Nationale operates as a branch with its head office in Quebec and no safety concerns about Hochelaga.
Wages were increased by four large coal companies in the Elkhorn field and two in Flattop by 15 cents to curb miners leaving for Missouri and Kansas. The move affects about 4,000 workers. In Huntington, workers at American Car and Foundry plant won a 30 percent raise for blacksmiths and 10 percent for helpers, about 200 men affected.
Ambassador Choate and Premier Salisbury met to discuss the Alaska boundary issue. Sir Julian Pauncefote said the matter could be settled in twenty minutes if Canada were not in the way, noting both governments are harmonious with Canada as the remaining obstacle.

News from Ortiz Mexico reports multiple Americans and Mexicans killed along the Yaqui river valley east and southeast of Ortiz. A courier described a fierce engagement forty miles southeast, with alleged evidence linking merchants J. F. Remley of Hermosillo and E. Miller to the incident.
Aug 1 report says Grant and Globe smelters will start up near Monday if the men return. Union workers stand firm and plan to guard plants to deter others from entering. The Post urges the men to resume work as the best course under the circumstances.
A photographer in his employ was killed along with others as residents desert their homes and mining camps in the interior. Remley had lived in Sonora twelve years. his mother and sister still reside in Missouri. Other valley towns report inhabitants leaving for safety.
Commissioner’s Court runs daily as Judge Sexton and Assistant Foster handle heavy workload. Chinese exclusion violators are arrested regularly, many attempting entry from Mexico to smuggle back across the border. This morning Woo Yum was bound over to the grand jury after a hearing on the charge.
The remains of George R. White purchasing agent for the Juarez company who died yesterday will be sent to Muscatine Iowa for interment by Undertaker Nagley. He died at his daughter Mrs. J. H. McKinnell’s home from heart failure at age 68 after a brief illness. He was born in Vermont and leaves a widow and several children. Cashier Brown of the G H & S A returned from a hunting trip in the Sacramentos.
In Washington at 10:30 the successor to the War Department took the oath of office in a hastened ceremony attended by officers in full dress. Gen. Miles arrived at 11 a.m. after the oath, exchanging a cold handshake with Gen. Alger, marking a tense moment in the transfer.
The New York firm contracted to execute the gold statue of the Colorado girl at the Paris exposition has withdrawn from the project. No further efforts will be made to present the statue.
Senor Luis Vazquez, Spain's champion billiardist, played a 500 point straight rail exhibition at the Gem with Mr. Houston, giving a 250 point handicap. Vazquez showed brilliance after a slow start, making a 134 point run, while Houston's best was 29. An after game display featured Senoritas Fernanda Luz and Clotilde with a French coin pendent game. The next match is set for eight o'clock tonight with the same handicap.
A train plunged from a bridge sending cars into the river. Officials investigated the accident locating wreckage and noting injuries among crew members. Rescue teams recovered passengers and began coordinating with authorities for a formal inquiry.
Four men die and seven are injured when mail train No. 10 derails near Boone Iowa three miles west of the city. The wreck on the Des Moines River bridge pins the locomotive in the river. conductor Rose and brakeman Doorman survive. Names include D. D. Stone John Masterson Geo Schmidt J. K. O'Brien and other postal clerks. The cause is unknown.
Nogales collector Chenoweth arrived from Washington to face civil service charges alleging political persecution. Indictments in Santa Cruz County implicate rivals seeking the post. Hoey named as successor did not assume duties. investigation aims to vindicate Chenoweth. He departed for Nogales this afternoon.
Funeral services for Joe Buggles will be held this afternoon at 4 30 with interment at Evergreen by Nagley. Attending groups include the Foresters Sons of Herman Knights of Labor and the Teutonia Singing society. He was popular in the city and his death is deeply regretted.
Fred Johns and Mrs A Williams express thanks to friends in El Paso and Rincon for kindness and sympathy shown during the fatal illness and death of Mrs Fred Johns in Rincon.
Will Franklin from Bisbee appeared before Justice Spencer at 10 for an examining trial after a morning shooting at Will Shaw. He was arrested on a warrant charging assault with intent to murder and the case advances to the grand jury. Franklin has been employed at the Orndorff since July 6.
Deeds recorded today show Campbell Real Estate transferring lots to W. B. Latta in Campbell’s addition with frontages on Utah street and Virginia street totaling 260 feet, prices ranging from 200 to 3125 dollars. James B. Hopple and wife convey lots 8 9 and 10 in Campbell’s addition to Michael P. Maloney and wife for 1035 dollars.
Norton Wright Welton aged 65 died at 914 N Stanson Street August 1. The funeral will be at St Clement's Church at 10 a m August 2. He had liver trouble for over a year and leaves a wife who remained with him.
Bill collectors are out in full force this morning swarming everywhere with the same confidence they show to a millionaire. They press claims on a mechanic in the machine shop as well as others.
James Hubbert of Alamogordo New Mexico married Nellie Lee of San Saba Texas in a Sunday ceremony at five o'clock officiated by Rev. Hyde in this city.
Librado Maese and Miss Maria Contreras were issued marriage licenses today signaling plans to wed. The ceremony date and venue were not listed in the notice.
The Saxophone quartette led by Gus Buckler and Professor Souflee with Concha played for friends last evening. The music was excellent and those serenaded enjoyed it hugely. WEEKLY HERALD $2.00 per year.
