In Las Cruces on April 25 Judge Newcomb's court concluded the Crave and Rhodes case with a not guilty verdict after less than thirty minutes of jury deliberation.
Roberts reports General Pole-Carew's division reached Roodekob with French cavalry driving Boers from ground. General French crossed the Modder at Waslsbank to block retreat, Chermside entering Dewetsdorp. General Hamilton repelled Boers near Sacnas post, Highland brigade to Hamilton's aid, no casualties. Brabant and Hart four miles from Wepener. Dewetsdorp occupation reduces likely trouble. Volunteers for Yeomanry inspected, recruits neat, horses in good condition.
Representative Noonan of Chicago returns to his seat and introduces a resolution on the recent American Steel and Wire shutdowns. The firm, organized in New Jersey with 390 million capital, closed thirteen mills in Illinois Pennsylvania and Ohio, allegedly depressing its stock price on the New York Stock Exchange. The resolution calls for a seven member House social committee to probe the closures and NYSE regulation of corporate actions.

The trial of Sargeant John Kipper of Company A at Fort Bliss for the alleged murder of Policeman Nant Stewart was set for 9 oclock Monday morning April 30. A large jury and many witnesses filled the courtroom as Kipper in full uniform appeared cool and unconcerned. District attorney Dean represented the state and M W Stanton defended Kipper after a request for continuance to June was denied.
Officer Billy Smith arrested Enrique Martinez at 2 a.m. for alleged burglary after finding a pile of clothing in an alley behind El Paso Street. Martinez stacked boxes against the Grand Central restaurant rear door and entered through a transom, crouching above the door to flee before being captured.
