Hermit Desertion Story From Victory Mountain Described

Johnsbury Vermont reports Dinner H Cox who dodged the draft by retreating to Victory mountain. After serving two weeks at Camp Devens he deserted, lived as a hermit, ate bark and leaves, slept in trees, and walked barefoot to avoid tracks. He reappeared, was arrested, examined, and placed under observation in a hospital as to sanity amid a government $100 reward for his capture.

Robbery drains elderly sexton of 7000 dollars at St Agnes chapel

Thomas Brown, aging sexton at St Agnes chapel, found his desk ransacked and $7000 in cash and Liberty bonds missing from his office on West Ninety first Street. Burglars entered via window using an escape ladder, leaving papers scattered and valuables stolen. A patrolman stood within a block. police collected fingerprints but Brown fears recovering the loss.

Deserter Adolph Gerds Tolman Claims He Impersonated Heir

An 18 year old deserter from the U S Navy at Great Lakes confessed to pretending to be the missing heir to a 24 million estate. He told officers his hoax began in Milwaukee after a stranger claimed he resembled the Tolman heir and together they plotted a fake fortune.

Tragic playmate dies after daring match experiment

Five year old Wealthie Lunde of Wood Street is burned fatally when she lights a paper with a neighbor's match in a child's experiment. Two boys, Miles Devine and James Fitzgerald, helped smother the flames but she dies at Lakeview hospital after delirious hours. The incident occurred Sunday evening and led to medical and police inquiries as investigators cite a dangerous trend of child play with fire.
