Arkansans In Washington By Gordon Brown
Senator McClellan of Arkansas triggered a Senate clash over a civil rights bill amendment. The vote on whether the amendment was germane ended with 33 for Stennis and 48 against, leaving the amendment defeated. The measure would let the attorney general sue to protect workers’ labor rights. Arkansas lawmakers shifted on two federal pay bills, with Trimbles for the $10,000 rise and Gathings against. Harris supported the second increase. Mills changed his stance via a live pair with Herlong, voting present.

Rights Bill Amendments Defeated in Senate Vote
Washington AP dispatch reports Arkansas Senators McClellan and Fulbright supporting amendments to the civil rights bill, but all four measures on which action was taken were defeated. One proposal would have killed the public accommodations section, another sought to require racial balance in schools, and McClellan backed changes limiting the Attorney General’s power to file certain suits.

U S Firm Plans Indonesia Chassis Sale Amid War Ties
The American owned Vauxhall Motor Co. will sell 1000 truck and bus chassis worth 2.8 million dollars to Indonesia, with Britain in undeclared war context. A Foreign Office official said the embargo on military supplies does not apply to these vehicles. A spokesman noted little chance of military use. The deal echoes Britain’s Cuba bus sale criticism in the United States. The British said the unit is a GM subsidiary.
