Mayner Would Judge Cigarette Ad Standards Role
Former New Jersey Governor Meyner, an on again off again cigarette smoker, says his job directing a new cigarette advertising code should be that of a judge not a tobacco industry image maker. The code sets uniform standards, gives review and up to 100000 dollar fines for violations, bars ads claiming smoking brings social prominence or sexual appeal, and restricts ads in media aimed at under 21. Companies named Meyner’s appointment as giving him complete authority to enforce the code.
