Right-to-work Leader Sees No Repeal of Section 14 b

Reed Larson of the National Right-to-Work Committee in Little Rock says repeal of Hartley Act Section 14 b is unlikely next session due to rising public support for voluntary unionism. He notes Arkansas and 18 other states have right to work laws and cites strong opposition to compulsion from voters and Congress.

El Dorado Council Approves 1966 Bond Policy Plan

The El Dorado City Council approved a blanket bond policy for officials and employees with Franques Insurance Agency for 1966 at a cost of 1198 dollars. The council also authorized a street light installation at Briarwood and Crestwood with a pole by the power company. A light at 529 East Main Street was referred for study. An ordinance repealing Ordinance 953 banning wooden shingles outside the fire district was passed. The council agreed to lease land from the McKinney Estate for a motorcycle race track in McKinney Park. A resolution urged residents to vote for Act 9 revenue bonds to finance Cooper Tire and Rubber Co expansion with no tax levy. A taxi surcharge proposal was referred to the ordinance committee. Six bills over 500 dollars were approved for payment. The mayor was authorized to allocate funds for College Avenue reconstruction and police and Goodwin Field work.

El Dorado to Get Single ZIP Code 71730 Next January

El Dorado will receive one five digit ZIP code starting January 15 under a nationwide ZIP reform. Postmaster Henry T. Hogg said the change merges multiple codes into 71730 to streamline mail delivery and ease public transition during Christmas mailing season.

Symposium Set By Union County Tuberculosis Association

The Union County Tuberculosis Association will sponsor the first annual symposium on chest diseases on December 12 at the Oak Tree Restaurant from 10 am to 4 pm. Four academic physicians from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine will participate in the program.

Circuit Jury Awards $40 000 in Personal Injuries Suit

A Second Circuit Court jury awarded $40 000 in a personal injuries suit stemming from a boat accident on the Ouachita River near El Dorado. The plaintiffs Jerald Carney and guardian HooL Carney sought $175 000. the award allocated $25 000 for Jerald and $15 000 punitive to his father. The verdict blamed Parker 90 percent and Davis 10 percent. other defendants were cleared of negligence.
