Tax Assessments For The Township Begin on Monday

Personal property tax assessments begin Monday in Edwardsville Township as in the rest of the county. Township assessor Dan L. Eilers outlines office hours, deputy staff, and the door-to-door process, urging cooperation to save time and tax money. Tax Booklets Available At Intelligencer Office

With federal income tax reporting time about two weeks away the Intelligencer offers a limited number of the official 1963 federal income tax guide booklets. Published by the U S Treasury Dept the booklet is sold at 40 cents at the Intelligencer office.

Federal Building Could Be Reality Within Short Time

U S Rep Melvin Price said Edwardsville may get a federal building this session. A $507,900 complex by GSA and Post Office would house a post office and space for other federal agencies in Madison County. Price noted Bureau of the Budget delays but expects passage in 1964 or the current session. A private builder would lease a Marine post office facility to the federal government.

Alderman Flavin Denies Making Accusations

Alderman Wilbur Falvin says he did not accuse Police Chief Hartung of expense claims. Hartung and Water Supt Leuschke faced charges of claiming mileage for personal cars. Flavin argues the amendment on expense money didn’t go far enough and questions gas costs versus departmental vehicle use. Flavin seeks re election in Fourth Ward on April 16.

Rail unions drop bid to block featherbedding rule changes

CHICAGO UPI rail unions abandoned a lengthy court fight to stop the railroads from enforcing anti featherbedding work rule changes. A federal court injunction placing a moratorium on the rule changes was expected to be lifted early next week.

BiState Agency Takes Over Bus Lines on Monday

The Bi-State Development Agency will take over 15 area bus lines at 12:01 a.m. Monday after Friday action cleared the way. Four lines in Madison County are involved, with title transfers completed at the county recorder’s office and in St Louis and St Clair counties. About $28,000,000 total project, including real estate and equipment, with 5,000 documents checked.

Freeman Sets May 21 Date for Vote On Wheat Program

Washington UPI Freeman sets May 21 for nationwide referendum to determine support for the administration's 1964 two price wheat program. Certificated wheat at 2.00 per bushel and non certificated at 1.30. two thirds of votes favoring the plan required for it to take effect. Aimed to cut wheat surpluses, protect farm income, and stabilize prices for consumers.

Polaris Missiles Headed to Mediterranean

A U S Polaris missile submarine has taken up station in the Mediterranean in the first step of plans to replace ground based missiles in Turkey and Italy. The nuclear powered submarine, identity not disclosed, passed through the Strait of Gibraltar earlier than expected and carries 16 missiles with a range over 1700 miles.
