Trooper Harry A. Bauers Jr. of the Illinois State Police will receive the Certificate of Merit from the American National Red Cross for saving a Edwardsville Route 4 mother and her seven children from carbon monoxide poisoning. Bids for seven prime contracts on SIU Edwardsville campus buildings will be opened at 2 30 p m Thursday in the university auditorium at Alton. Bids cover electrical heating and air conditioning ventilation non conductive covering fire protection plumbing and temperature control.
Edwardsville Community Hospital Association spent the majority of its two hour annual meeting discussing a proposed satellite hospital for Edwardsville connected to a St. Louis area facility. No fund drives will be pursued now due to lagging interest and the board plans further study before decisions. The four officers were re elected for a second year: Dr. H Brubaker president Sol Mack treasurer Mrs Fred Klopmeier secretary. Three board members agreed to another year: David Simpson Mrs William H Rohrkaste Jr Loch.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed John Edwin Myers's death penalty for the 1962 murder of hitchhiker Arthur DeKraai near Midland and sent the case back to district court for retrial. The ruling cites juror statements that discredited defense witnesses while supporting a state psychiatrist's testimony.
A Granite City motorist, Charles E. Bryant, 40, died after a head on collision on Highway 67TA near By-pass 86. Police report Bryant passed another vehicle when his car collided with Emmett Clemons, 42, of Madison. Clemons was in fair condition with a fractured shoulder and serious cuts.
Springfield legislators fail to act on a ban on state funds for contraceptives for relief recipients. PAC chair Arnold Maremont will discuss the issue April 18 as House votes for ongoing IPAC programs. Eight witnesses testified, Rep Ralph Smith opposes funding, while Senate already advanced a similar measure. House Appropriations rejects a 4 million cut and supports 51.1 million to sustain IPAC through June 30.
New York publishers and striking photoengravers settled terms early, ending a 120 day dispute as morning papers prepare to publish tonight. The New York Times and Herald Tribune boosted daily prices to 10 cents with longer rate hikes for regional editions. Sunday rate remains 30 cents in the metro area and 40 to 50 cents elsewhere. The News and the Mirror kept 5 cent prices. City Hall hailed the peace with ratification by Photoengravers Local 1 due at 4 pm EST. Printing is expected to resume tonight for the Times, Mirror, and News within hours after picket withdrawal.
