The Edwardsville League of Women Voters will hold a candidates meeting on April 9 at the Madison County Courthouse despite a public hearing set for the same evening by the City Council. A severe late day storm drenched Edwardsville and surrounding areas with more than an inch of rain and hail up to three quarters of an inch. Lightning caused brief power outages between Wood River and Stallings, and 25 telephones failed in the city. Weather observer Detmar Gebhart logged 3 inches of rain from 6 p.m. Sunday to yesterday morning.

Henry Buhrmester Dies After Long Illness in Edwardsville Paint Firm
Henry A Buhrmester 77 who led a paint wallpaper business in Edwardsville for 25 years died Monday night at St Josephs Hospital Alton after a lingering illness. He started in Troy and moved to Edwardsville in 1929 joining McNitt Wallpaper and Paint Co later expanding to 201 North Second St and then 201 North Second St. He took his son Lester as partner in 1953 and sold his share in 1954. Survived by wife Emma son Lester daughter Naomi Neubauer four sisters and two granddaughters. Final rites Thursday at Immanuel Methodist church Valle a Garden of Memory.
