Pine Island Author Was In Cuban Jail

Eddy Suarez Rivas, author of the Editorial page dispatch on life in a Cuban prison on the Isle of Pines, was a law student at Villanova University Havana when jailed as a political prisoner. He was held four months at La Cabana and 29 months on the Isle of Pines. He studied at Valley Forge Military Academy and Boston University. His father served as Cuban senator for 20 years and was agriculture minister under the Price government.

Voters League Sets Candidate Session for District 7

Edwardsville League of Women Voters announces a public meeting for all District 7 Board of Education and Edwardsville City Council candidates. The event on April 9 at 1 45 p m will be in Circuit Court No 1 Madison County courthouse. Candidates receive prepared questions and floor queries will be allowed.

District 7 Board May Purchase 11 New School Buses

Edwardsville district 7 board approved specs for 11 new school buses to start in 1963 64 replacing vehicles over 10 years old. Transportation director Kenneth Klette proposed separate bids for bodies and chassis and noted three year financing may be used with tax anticipation warrants if needed. He urged bulk purchasing for cost and maintenance efficiency.

Edwardsville Tax Rate Set at 3.29 per Hundred

Miss Eulalia Hotz, county clerk, announced that Edwardsville Township 1962 collector books are complete. The tax rate is 3.29 dollars per one hundred, with the distribution of each dollar including county, township, road and bridge, Edwardsville, and school district shares. The total extended for collection reaches 1,709,884.10, up from 1,611,543.03 last year, excluding 12 East Side Levee and Sanitary District items.

LeClaire Addition Nears Completion and School Plans

Architect Edward A. Kane told the Edwardsville District 7 Board of Education that the New LeClaire School addition will be finished within two weeks. The senior high school addition project worth 1,216,000 is slated for bid by end of June. He noted civil defense director John Hair’s suggestion to add bomb shelters under the new library area. The board asked Kane to pursue federal funding for shelters and report back next meeting. The board also approved employees purchasing tax sheltered annuities.

Missouri blue laws struck down as vague by state high court

Missouri Supreme Court ruled the 137 year old blue laws unconstitutional calling the provisions vague and backwoods. The decision ends Sunday closing in Missouri, allowing shoppers to buy baby bottles and 3.2 beer, while legislators study redefining what may be sold. Small stores fear impact. some chains plan openings. Senate panel later recommended a Sunday closing law similar to Pennsylvania.

Illinoisans Must Pay St. Louis Tax

Missouri Supreme Court reaffirms St. Louis earnings tax on Illinois residents working in the city.
