Highland Accident Strikes Downan Elderly Couple At Crossing
An elderly Trenton couple, William F Giger 82 and Rose Giger 74, died when their car was hit by a New York Central train on the Grantfork road crossing north of Highland. The crash occurred about 11 am at an unprotected crossing with only a whistle. The engineer said he did not see the auto. the fireman saw it seconds before impact as the train whistled. The train traveled about 90 feet, then backed up after stopping about a half mile away. Deputy Coroner Robert Spengel pronounced the pair dead at the scene.

Hooded Trio Robs Granite City Bar at 6 AM
In Granite City early this morning two men and a woman in knit sweaters robbed Pete and Mary’s Tavern at 2409 Lincoln Ave. They tied owner Mary Margie with copper wire, forced open the cash register, and escaped with about $90. Police report eyehole- cut hoods and indicate a second break‑in at AMVETS Post No 51 on Lake View Road, with 15 bottles of whiskey and $50 taken.

Two Granite City Men Fined for Loitering Near Service Station
Two Granite City men, Donald R. Carnay 23 and Billy J. Castile 20, were jailed in Madison County after loitering near a service station where a break in was suspected. Special Investigator Raymond Perry found a pried pad lock and held them for disorderly conduct, fined $100 with costs, then returned to jail when unable to pay. Both had prior arrests on various charges.
