Four Men Aboard Barges Killed or Missing After Ice Co Explosion

Two dead and two missing after a violent explosion at Ice Co docks near Hartford. Two barges sank and debris spread over a six block area as rescuers hunted in a rainstorm. Identified dead are Billie Maggart 25 East Alton and David Sorgea 23 Hartford. Missing are Earnest Kanter 49 East Alton and Charles B Knight 35 Hartford. Authorities blamed volatile fumes and noted a steam plant and nearby barge were damaged. The Southern Towing Co barge owned the wreck and National Marine Service equipment also harmed.

$400 000 Suit Is Entered in Court

Two Granite City men Guy M. Lahar and Otto A. Willaredt are named as defendants in a Madison County Circuit Court damage suit totaling 400000 arising from a crash at Illinois Route 3 and Maryville Road. The plaintiffs William P. Green and Robert McCommas allege severe and permanent injuries with Green and McCommas each seeking 100000.

Illinois House Eyes Flat Income Tax Bill

A Illinois bill would impose a flat 2 percent income tax on residents and corporations, paired with sales and property tax reductions. Rep. Joe Russell claims $336 million yearly revenue and tax relief for about 75 percent of residents, with some paying more. Meeting To Discuss Public Buildings In Madison County

County Clerk Eulalia How announced four board of supervisors committees will meet March 11 at 2 30 p m to discuss establishing a public building commission in Madison County The Detention Home New Buildings Finance and County Jail Committees will hear experts in public financing discuss the proposal The commission could sell bonds to finance new buildings and the county would rent from the commission with rent paying the bonds Miss How said she has mailed letters to other Illinois counties to learn if they have building commissions and responses are pending

Copper and brass firms fined for price fixing

Eight leading copper and brass companies and five executives were fined 158000 in U S District Court for conspiring to fix prices. Judge Blumenfeld assigned 132000 to companies and 26000 to individuals with no appeal, dated after April 1. Fines reflect executive salaries, with listed firms including Bridgeport Brass, Phelps Dodge, and Calumet and Hecla, among others.

Authorities Seek Cause of Tragedy

The explosion at William Hanks’s house on Third Avenue leveled the home at 2 55 pm Monday killing his wife Eleanor 49 and injuring Hanks 53 and son William Jr 23. She died at St Joseph Hospital Alton. The family and neighbors aided in the rescue as fire and gas crews investigated. Authorities indicated gas was unlikely the cause though a broken gas line burned briefly. investigators will continue to probe the scene.

Budget Commission Rejects Hike in State Aid Formula

SPRINGFIELD The Budgetary Commission rounds out its year by turning down a proposal to raise the state aid formula for public schools. It approved $64 million in new money for schools while keeping the $252 per student per year formula at current levels, passing the cut vote without opposition. The panel overall trimmed about $220 million from requests but endorsed increases totaling $270 million for universities, common schools, mental health, and public aid. Commission Chairman Sen. Everett R. Peters warned tax hikes may be needed if governors and legislature accept the panel's guidance.
