Edwardsville post office and other U S offices will reduce to 44 hour weeks after Tuesday under the Shorter Week law limiting weekly hours to 55. No new clerks or carriers will be hired, deliveries will be trimmed on Saturdays, with one residential and two business district deliveries. Substitutes gain time, and postal employees receive six extra four hour days annually. A highway inspector has ordered rural route placards in Edwardsville.

Smith Dies at Sanitarium In Madison County
Thomas Smith, a 42 year old original patient who entered the Madison County Tuberculosis Sanitarium on May 18, 1926, died yesterday afternoon at the facility. Relatives took the body to Collinsville for final rites. Smith previously received tuberculosis treatment in Springfield for three years and at the local sanitarium for five years without improvement. He was the last of the original nine patients in county care, five of whom remained alive last week. The survivors include a nurse in Wheaton who began as a patient, a woman living in Alton painting cards, another in Grants Pass, and a fourth in Morrison. one man lives in East Alton.

Life Guard Saves Two At Club Lake
Betty Ann Wise eight, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Wise of Edwardsville, and another unnamed girl nearly drowned Sunday afternoon at Madison County Country Club lake. Lifeguard Miss Marie Baird of Edwardsville, newest club guard, dragged both to safety as one girl vanished twice and Granite City companion briefly disappeared. Club members on shore could not assist.

Alton Woman Claimed by Death at 81
Mrs. Alice E. Smith of Alton died yesterday at her home, just hours before a playground dedication she funded. The long time benefactor supported Madison County institutions, including a $6000 donation to the Tuberculosis Sanitarium placed under trustees’ control, with partial use on lab equipment and the rest held for future needs. She left two daughters, four brothers, two sisters, and other survivors. Funeral services were at her residence with Rev. J R Warner officiating.

Accident Sunday on Route Three
A two car collision occurred Sunday afternoon on a curve about 1.5 miles north of Mitchell on Route 3. C. R. Martin of the city, a state patch worker, drove one car northbound. S. P. Evanoff of St. Louis drove the other car southbound with three companions. One passenger suffered a head laceration and was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Granite City. Both vehicles were heavily damaged. Evanoff's damage estimated at 25 dollars and Martin's damage undetermined that morning.
