Litchfield and Madison Railway officials weigh abandoning Edwardsville repair shops and roundhouse and shifting operations to Madison. About 200 workers would be affected with payroll around $10,000 to $20,000 monthly. Part of the office moved to St Louis in March 1930 to promote business.
Two Edwardsville contractors won bids for the Tuxhorn Building project, with John L. Schwager low on the general contract at 6950 dollars and Edwardsville Plumbing & Heating Co securing the electrical contract at 997 dollars. Painting and related work estimated to add 5000 to 8000 dollars. other bids from Hellring Construction 8537, Hoffmann 7798, Mott & oFrshee 7204.75. Work to begin after contract signing.
Max Auténrieb, a Edwardsville based artist with state wide renown as a church decorator, is awarded the contract to redecorate First Presbyterian Church here. Pastor Rev CG L Attig will arrange August work. Auténrieb studios have secured multiple church contracts this year including projects at St Boniface Quincy First Baptist Wood River and recent work at Springfield Sacred Heart and SS Peter and Paul. He is a Munich trained artist with 26 years in church decoration and recent study trips to France and Germany.
In Madison County Circuit Court yesterday J I Gillham sought an injunction to block prosecution of a 2500 claim in the Probate Court. The Country Club Real Estate Improvement Company of Decatur filed the claim arising from organizing a real estate promotion group. The bill asserts Fred C Gillham did not receive value for his note and that the note is void. Papers show a group issued notes in Bisht.
Despite extreme heat about 135 persons attended the Edwardsville Junior High School Auditorium session sponsored by local railroads. Speakers highlighted taxation, wages, and utilities tied to rail transportation, with out of town railroad officials from Illinois Terminal and Wabash present. The program opened with a Male Quartette and detailed figures on Madison County railroad taxes totaling 768 826.86 for 1930, Edwardsville railroad salaries 1 062 444.71 for 1929-1930, and related utility and water payments. Mayor Chas E. Gueltig gave a welcoming address.
Albert S. Jones a New Douglas resident of 55 years died at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield at 2 30 this morning kidney trouble listed as the cause. Born in Alton in 1855 he moved to New Douglas in 1876 and married Caroline Hutchinson in 1880. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary in February 1930. He belonged to the Baptist Church of New Douglas since 1877. Surviving are his widow seven children eight grandchildren three sisters and a brother Funeral plans not yet completed.
In Texarkana Texas pajama wear on the streets is allowed for both men and women while across the street in Texarkana Arkansas police remove a pajama clad young woman saying she must change. Texas officials dispute the Arkansas action and invite pajama wearers to cross the street.
Edwardsville stores today market the first homegrown raspberries of the year at 30 cents a quart box. Supplies look large unless the sun damages the crop, with peaches and apples from Southern Illinois orchards also sold. peaches wholesale at $1.75 a bushel while fruit quality is generally small and not fully ripe.
Washington reports the Hoover administration seeks to aid Germany from its debt crisis while boosting U S trade. Possible moves include a rethinking of British reparations and a substantial Federal Reserve credit for Germany. White House statements note plans remain speculative with no definite conclusions yet.
Circuit Judge Jesse R. Brown of Alton, a Republican nominee for Supreme Judge in this district, won endorsement from the Montgomery and Bond Republican organizations yesterday. The Madison County Republican committee split when selecting delegates to the judicial nominating convention, forming two rival delegations.
Madison County Democrats gathered 200 in the county circuit court room to select 42 delegates and alternates for the Judicial Convention at Vandalia on July 7. They unanimously endorsed County Judge Wilbur A. Traves of Edwardsville as Democratic successor to Judge William M. Farmer and elected James Broderick as chairman with Leo Schmidt as secretary. Members of the delegate committee include James Callahan, James Simpson, Anthony Winters, John B. Harris, and Ben Hodge.
Springfield June 20 Republicans term the fifty seventh Illinois State Legislature one of the most successful sessions in history as it adjourns sine die after a night session. The House alone met while the Senate cleared its calendar and adjourned. The session saw near 2,500 proposals introduced though fewer than ten percent passed into law. Governor L. L. Emmerson was noted in the proceedings.
In a Wednesday General Assembly session over 1000 bills were stricken from the calendar including three Madison County road projects the Capital Highway Cloverleaf Highway and Worden to Belleville Highway. The Venice Viaduct bill survived but was later eliminated on Friday, with talk of a 90 day special session and possible reintroduction. Local officials push for Route Four alignment and Venice Viaduct start, with Governor Emmerson’s help sought by a Madison mass meeting driven Mayors Committee comprising Venice Madison Granite City Nanteolt and Edwardsville chiefs.
Lake Geneva Wisconsin reports a deputy sheriff was shot through the heart and killed during a gun battle at a private garage described as a drinking party. A neighbor, the alleged assailant, was critically wounded.

Bernard Marcus and Sol Singer and his son Herbert Singer were found guilty. Henry Pollock was not. Sentencing set for Tuesday. maximum seven years plus fines. Bank not federal despite name.
