Jubilee Celebration for Rev E Eckhard at St Boniface
A silver sacerdotal jubilee marks twenty five years since Rev E J Eckhard’s ordination. The St Boniface Catholic Church pastor will be honored with a high mass a clergy banquet and a civic celebration in Edwardsville on Wednesday June 24. The diocese gathering includes clergy from St Louis to Quincy, with Rev I C Schlepphorst temporarily serving. Eckhard, born in Alton in 1880, was ordained in 1906 and has served at St Boniface since 1919. He recently left Alexian Brothers Hospital in St Louis for Alton and will not return to Edwardsville until June 22.

Hunger march participants housed in jail cells
Springfield June 10 Police jail cells were declared the only housing for Hunger March participants planned for next Sunday and Monday after organizers failed to secure a meeting place or sleeping space. N Kjar of Chicago, representing the State Committee of Unemployed Councils, sought the State Arsenal but was refused. At City Hall he learned the only convention space available was the police station. Five groups from across the state will gather at Reservoir Park for a meeting to draft a request for unemployment insurance and relief legislation for the Illinois General Assembly now in session.

Fire destroys DBranzer brothers shed at St Jacob
Shortly before noon today a fire razed the DBranzer Brothers machine shed at St Jacob, destroying the shed, all machinery and a car. The cause is unknown amid a second fire in the town this week. Yesterday a five room frame house owned by Daniel Widicus suffered partial roof damage from chimney sparks, with water damage to ceilings. loss covered by insurance.

Farmers Inspect Alhambra field for wheat varieties and seed supply
About 300 Madison County farmers gathered at the State Experimental Station in Alhambra to hear five Illinois College of Agriculture speakers. They inspected 30 wheat varieties, including Fulhio, and learned about pest control, soil building, and seed supplies for fall planting across roughly 2000 acres. Demonstrations on chinch bug barriers were held, with notes on the eastern Wight townships as heavily infested.

Blood tests fail to diagnose youth ailment
Lester Wood son of Mr and Mrs John C Wood east of Edwardsville is a patient at Missouri Baptist Sanitarium St Louis with an undiagnosed ailment. Blood tests completed yesterday did not reveal the seat of the trouble. Doctors cannot X-ray due to his nervous condition. Wood suffered a head injury in a car accident last August which is now believed to be related to his present condition.

Edwardsville Volunteer Fire Plan Aims at Higher Protection
Edwardsville will gain stronger fire protection under a plan adopted by the Volunteer Fire Department. Six paid firemen will be selected to sleep at City Hall on a rotating schedule, with nominal pay, to improve readiness and insurance ratings. A committee will choose the six, and they may serve as reserves for special duties. The city will also send representatives to the Illinois Fire College in Champaign starting June 23. A case will be made to preserve the 1894 banner gifted by Edwardsville women to the department.

William P. Wetzel, a former Granite City police member, died Monday at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Granite City from diabetes. In Ascoli Piceno Italy on June 10 Crown Prince Umberto heir to the Italian throne sent a new violin to 11 year old Tommaso Trugeni an orphan who had pleaded for an instrument after his tutors noted his rapid progress with the violin. The gift followed a letter Tommaso wrote to the Crown Prince seeking help. The instrument is described as a beautiful costly instrument from royal construction and Tommaso's instructors say he shows the makings of a master.
