Seven Madison County youths, including six from Edwardville area, received purebred Holstein calves today to start seven potential cattle herds. The Edwardsville Chamber of Commerce supports a fall Achievement Day with prize funds and calf exhibi tion. Calves came from five county herds, priced 80 to 415 dollars, and are tied to Eugene Nagel’s dairy herd.

Funeral services for Louis F. Backs, a well known farmer of Carpenter, were conducted Saturday afternoon after a Wednesday death at his home. Rev. Kura officiated at the Lutheran Church, with two sermons, one English and one German, and floral tributes described as beautiful. Interment followed in Carpenter Lutheran Cemetery, with 14 pallbearers and six flower girls. Many relatives and friends traveled from multiple nearby towns to attend.

White, a border customs patrolman, was held on second degree manslaughter charges after the fatal shooting of Henry Virkula as he drove with his wife and two children near International Falls. A fellow officer B A Serryine aided the pursuit. bullets struck the car but no one inside was injured. An investigation ordered by N A Lindbergh was placed with Walter Nelson, border patrol chief. White joined the staff May 1 and was instructed to use firearms only in self defense. Serryine has five years in service.

Two 16 and 17 year old Oklahoman youths were arrested after a robbery at a filling station on Routes 4 and 16 south of Staunton. They, with an associate Bernie Knapp of Shawnee, allegedly demanded cash at gunpoint, fled in a car later abandoned. authorities said Knapp escaped and was expected to return for arrest. The Ming No 6 safety and first aid team of Madison Coal Corp Mount Olive took first in an elimination contest at Glen Carbon defeating Carterville and Glen Carbon teams with about 99.6 percent. The winner will advance to a Kansas City national meet September 6 7. Other Illinois contests prepare teams for Kansas City with two day Taylorville events July 3 4. Each six man team includes one patient and five responders. Judges include A A Miller Griff Powell Charles Herbert and others from the Bureau of Mines and state inspectors.
