After closing a Soft Drink Parlor on St Louis Street a man named Berdick confronted a would be bandit at the corner of High and Union. Berdick, weaponless, knocked the robber down and fled, returning home to 515 Kingshighway. Edwardsville police could not locate the attacker.

Lawliss Elected Overseer of Poor at Alton
Edward M. Lawliss was elected Overseer of Poor at Alton by the Madison County Board of Supervisors late this afternoon, winning 31 votes to 27 over John M. Hermann. The defeated candidate is a son of Joseph Hermann who had resigned at the May meeting. Three votes were required. two previous ballots were tied 29 to 29. The post was created after Supervisor August Threde declined. Alton lacks funds to pay the official, and the $75 monthly salary must come from the county.

Glen Carbon Man Modene Dies At Home
Edward Erickson Modene of Glen Carbon died this morning at 1246 from a malignant growth. Born June 20, 1869 in Lennaun Sweden, he was 71. He married Augusta Berg in Beaver City Ne and moved to Glen Carbon. Survived by wife, eight children, three brothers and 17 grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at 2 PM at home and 2:30 PM at St Episcopal Church Glen Carbon. Burial in Glen Carbon Cemetery. Rev T W Burford will officiate.

Joseph Kruil of Granite City said he will set plans for a county convention to choose delegates for a judicial convention at Alton on July 19 to nominate a candidate for the August 31 special judicial election.
