Truck Driver Kidnapped In Shoes Heist Near Troy

Five or six masked bandits stopped a Ben Gutman Truck Service truck near Troy and kidnapped the driver. They seized 200 pairs of shoes valued at 1200 to 1600 dollars and fled, leaving the driver to walk home at dawn. The truck’s Missouri license was 34-633 and the heist disrupted shipment from a Charleston factory bound for St. Louis.

Western Military Cadet Review Tomorrow Parade at Alton

Army navy and Marine officers in regular reserve and National Guard will attend a parade and review of the Western Military Academy student battalion at Alton Illinois tomorrow afternoon. Col Ralph Jackson superintendent will host the event followed by a cadet drill featuring a lengthy silent display of the manual of arms and marches.

Dead man found in slough near Horseshoe Lake

Two Madison county fishermen were missing this week. Tony Schalus, 40, was found dead in a slough at Horseshoe Lake after a two day search. Joseph Ogar, 33, of St. Louis, is still missing and believed to be in Long Lake. An inquest ruled Schalus death accidental. Special policeman Pete Dreseh will guard new brick paving for one week.

All Dog Licenses Must Be Paid City June 15 This Year

City authorities in Edwardaville demand payment of dog taxes now. Many owners have already settled the annual fee due May 1 while numerous others remain unpaid. The police will begin killing of all dogs with unpaid amounts after June 16.

William Williamson Named Official Reader at Royal Neighbor Conclave

Thomas Williamson of Edwardaville Illinois served as the official reader at the Royal Neighbor convention in Minneapolis at Garrick theater. The article notes his long service since 1894 with Modern Woodmen of America, his role as the convention reader, and comparisons to the supreme oracle, Mrs. Mary E. Arnholt. Slaying of Ble Wa Dietrich Investigated by Jury

A coroner's jury found Dietrich was killed by gunshot wounds from an unknown shooter at his Long Lake home on May 23. Four witnesses including neighbor Philip Sipple and St. Louis officer John Bogowicz plus his wife and step daughter offered similar accounts, leaving investigators with no identify of the assailant or revolver handler.

Plowman Finds Century-Old Silver Hoard on Farm

Highland resident Henry Moyer visiting his son Arthur on a farm uncovered a canvas sack containing 19.76 in silver coins while plowing. The pieces ranged from 1864 to 1881 with about forty years in the ground, found in a long cultivated field.

May rainfall sets new record in St Louis weather notes

The St Louis Weather Bureau records May rainfall of 9.80 inches by 7 am, largest for any May. Snow fell on May 2 reaching 4 inches, with 32 degrees temperature tying a May record from 1876. Rain fell mainly May 1 2 12 13 and 18, leaving 2 inches for the rest.

Four youths drown in Central Illinois mishap

Springfield June 1 four youths aged 12 to 18 drowned yesterday while celebrating the school year end. Lloyd Jones 17 of Elwin was drowned when his canoe capsized in Lake Decatur and Lawrence Williams 13 of Leardstown drowned in Zerk's pond near Beardstown after cramps slowed his swimming.

Former resident Ralph Silcott chosen as Boy Scout delegate

Friends of Ralph Silcott of Gary Indiana celebrate his selection by the Boy Scout Council of Gary as one of two delegates to the International Boy Scout Jamboree in Wirkenhead England this summer. Silcott, an Eagle Scout since October 1921, holds fifty one merit badges and wears two years of palma. He has been assistant scoutmaster under Harry Matson of Troop 24 Gary and heads Gary Central Baptist Church troop 24 along with a training troop recently completing twelve weeks of leadership courses. He also serves as Gary council authority on scout handicraft and has earned praise from national scout officials.
