Springfield reporters note the Illinois Senate approved most of Gov. Otto Kerner’s sales tax loophole bills aimed at about $100,000 daily in new revenue. The House held hearings on identical measures as committees of the whole. The package tightens sales tax collection, limits retailer reports, and would charge interest on late payments. A fourth bill to require retailers to post bonds received a short grace period for new businesses. 75 bills were filed in the two chambers, with other measures moving on, including a proposal to ban the United Nations flag from public buildings and a divorce act amendment restricting grounds to adultery.
