Staunton Family Home Destroyed In Morning Fire
STAUNTON The residence of Fred Faries and his children was destroyed by an early morning fire discovered around 1 40 a m. The family escaped in their nightclothes in sub zero temperatures. Mrs Faries, recently operated on, is in Community Memorial Hospital. Fire Chief Stemploski cited fuel from a 300 gallon oil tank in the basement as feeding the flames. The fire department prevented spread to the garage and a 500 gallon oil tank outside. The family rents at 805 East Montgomery Staunton and donations of food clothing and furniture may be left at the Salvation Army.

Light Bulb Likely Sparked Home Fire in Slavic Residence
A fire at 1725 North Main Street damaged insulation around a water pipe after light from a bulb used to keep a freezing pipe warm likely ignited the insulation. The blaze burned a two by three foot hole in the floor. Firemen answered at 5:35 as Jerry Slavik, 78, walked 13 blocks to the station after stopping at a pay phone with only a nickel.

Ice Clamps Mississippi River Traffic Across Region
St Louis rivermen reported solid ice on the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers, with the Mississippi above the Alton dam nearly fully frozen and ice 11 to 17 inches thick. The Cairo gorge has lengthened to mile 15, and the Alton river area is similarly iced. Forecasts anticipate continued sub-freezing weather for five days, delaying any ice breakup and lengthening Cairo gorge upstream.

Refugees Arrive in Port Everglades on Shirley Lykes
The Shirley Lykes docked at Port Everglades with 1,170 Cuban refugees, the largest single exile group released by Fidel Castro. Seventeen ambulance cases and fourteen on stretchers characterized the rough 18 hour Havana crossing. Rosa Chacon Vasquez, 74, and Pedro Perez Vidal, 17, were among the first off, both ailing. Red Cross nurses aided them as emergency crews waited.

East St. Louis mother and three children die in blaze
A 27 year old mother Mrs Juanita Moore and her three children Keith 8 Charlotte 4 and Venetta 5 died when an oil stove exploded in their first floor apartment in a two story home. Five others including three small children were rescued. Injured were Mrs Martha Newson 22 and her daughters Myra Cynthia and Evelyn and Bry Bry Stephens 42. Fire officials say the first call came at 9 31 am and the two alarm fire burned for nearly two hours.
