Bunche sees U.N. drive on Katanga strongholds

Dr Ralph Bunche arrived on a Congo mission and indicated United Nations forces will move on Kolwezi and two more Katanga strongholds. He said Jadotville was taken as part of the plan to win freedom of movement, and stressed the objective extends to Kolwezi Sakenta and Dilolo with time running short.

Zoners Prepare County Ordinance For Board Vote

The county zoning commission will meet again in the Courthouse to revise the proposed county zoning ordinance and maps with a Chicago firm. Main topics include remaining change requests and timing for voter consideration, with final township hearings ending Jan. 15 and a Jan. 16 board meeting unlikely to include the proposal. A special session is expected at the end of January or early February to vote on the proposal.

Kerr Rises to Power, Dies Leaving Legacy in Senate

United Press International notes Sen Robert S Kerr of Oklahoma died at 66 leaving a mark as a powerful, influential senator. The piece recalls Kerr’s rags to riches rise, his role as a key ally for President Kennedy, and his anticipated influence as the new Congress began. Arthur Dean also resigned as chief U S delegate to the Geneva disarmament conference.

Striking Mobil Workers Return to Work in St Louis

In St Louis 35 of 45 Mobil Oil bulk plant employees ended an August strike by returning to work. Eight more indicated they would resume soon. The group will receive a 5 percent wage increase offered December 24 by Local 7664 of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers. Negotiations continue though no contract exists. Remaining 365 workers at the East St Louis refinery remain on separate terms, despite voting on the bulk plant deal.

One Cent Postal Rate Increase Begins Monday

Rates for letters and air mail rise one cent starting Monday, parcel post unchanged. First class five cents per ounce, post cards four cents, air mail letters eight cents and cards six cents, third class four cents for the first ounce plus one and a half cents per extra. Five cent stamps feature George Washington in blue. regulation also bans mailings under three by four and a half inches and oddly shaped items to suit automated canceling machines.

River Bluffs Girl Scout Office Moves to Edwardsville

River Bluffs Girl Scout Council officials moved the office to 105 North Main Street Edwardsville from Belleville. The enlarged space serves about 14,000 girls and 3,300 leaders across Madison St Clair Jersey and Monroe counties plus seven townships in Macallon County. Official opening was Jan 2 with staff still settling in.

Mount Olive Man Killed in Staunton Auto Crash

Robert J. Dobrino aged 2 of 107 Garfield Street Mount Olive was killed in Staunton when his eastbound car skidded on slippery rails at Wabash Crossing No. 5, crashed into a culvert and struck the Charles Morgan home on East Main Street. The incident occurred shortly before 5 this morning.

Madison County weighs investment of funds and tax issues

Five county officials and the finance committee will meet Monday to discuss investing county operating funds and protest taxes. The session follows a Dec. 28 legal opinion by State Attorney Dick Mudge that investing funds is legal and that interest belongs to the county board.
