Alleged Collinsville Slayer Hunted After Arrest in Wyoming

Five local merchants report losses from bad checks passed by a young woman in Edwardsville last Friday. She used $8.50 checks drawn on a suspected bank, bought items under $12, and left with about $7.50 in goods before realizing she had little cash. Checks bore the name Helen Mason and signature of Mrs. B. C. Davis. Merchants named include Williams Music, Tuxhom Brothers Hardware, Kroger, W. F. Wayne & Son, and B. A. Keller Co. The scheme relied on cashless transactions and prior cash intent.

Madison County Bypassed as Second Bond Road Letting Begins

Madison County is passed up in the first road letting under the second state bond issue as St Clair gains. Springfield announced bids will be received January 17 for 21 pavement sections covering 138 miles, eight earthworks totaling 32 miles, and 26 bridge sections totaling 52 bridges.

State highway bond issue to start next month

Officials announced in Springfield that the $100,000,000 state bond issue road system would begin next month with a target of building 1,000 miles in 1927. The Intelligencer had the plans last Monday, revealed to Chicago contractors and obtained from O. T. Dunlap after his return from the meeting.

Alton Man Missing and River Tragedy in Kentucky

A doorway collapse under a Big Sandy River bridge as high water swept away support and sent fourteen workmen into icy waters. Nine were rescued. five remained missing. The incident followed recent heavy rains. Also, Mrs Mae Moore of St Louis, a nurse, became ill and underwent an appendectomy at Belleville Hospital.

Mrs Mary Jane Walton died yesterday at her Dewey Avenue home. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 9 am at St Marys Catholic Church with Rev C A O Reilly officiating. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. She was born December 7 1846 in Manchester England maiden name Boyd and married Thomas Walton about 37 years ago. Survived by daughter Mrs Sulla Moran of St Louis and brother James Boyd of St Louis, two grandsons and several nieces and nephews. She came to America 37 years ago and was beloved as a kind Christian wife and mother.

Negro Confesses to Killing Carlinville Policeman

George Dennie, a black man, confessed to fatally shooting Carlinville police officer George Stanta on November 17 after being arrested at Bunkers Hill. He signed two confessions dated December 6, revealed today, and indicated he would plead guilty at arraignment in January.

Christmas Holiday Dismissals For Madison County Pupils

About 27 030 students in public and private schools in Madison County will be dismissed for nine days on Friday for Christmas. Many programs will be held tomorrow with morning and evening sessions. Christmas bonus planned for Commonwealth Steel workers

Frank Gialonese of Collinsville is jailed in Madison County after a yearlong manhunt for the October 18 1925 killing of Loula Dandrea following a dispute in the Cavacchi saloon. Police traced letters signed Frank Bova urging money, prompting a Diamondville Wyoming arrest and return. Gialonese, about 49, speaks little English and faced a preliminary hearing under Judge James B. Dale.

Liquid Air Demonstration Dazzles At Junior High

Liquid air froze grapes to marble hardness at 312 below zero while simultaneously welding steel at 3600 above zero. Lime test for road work planned in Madison County

Farm Advisor Raut leads lime road experiments in Madison County with lanes tested in Iowa, Ohio and Missouria. Ninety pounds of lime costing 1 dollar cover about six square yards. roads dug six inches deep, lime worked in to stabilize and drain soil. Tests show heavy traffic with no ruts in Iowa. Farm Bureau executive committee meets to organize, with township meetings to pick leaders in program work and Christmas post-year activities.
