Detour Work For Springfield Road Subway
C T Dunlap received yesterday orders to build a $2000 detour over the Big Pour Railroad at Gard Station on Springfield Road for subway construction. The detour will be crushed rock with grading, about 1200 feet long, using a temporary crossing west of the Springfield Road. Upon completion, the west crossing will be abandoned and a new north side road may be built.

Tragic accident harms young Miss Burks in Granite City
A two month old infant, Miss Burks, was injured early today in Granite City when struck by a train on Second Street near Pwoeutyr Vale. She was taken to St. & Hospital Grate Civ with a head wound deemed most serious by doctors. An unnamed woman accompanied the injured child to the hospital. Separately, Rep Faust of St Joseph Mo died in Washington from an apoplectic stroke suffered November 10 at age 44.

Man Ends His Life in Livingston Home
Steve Benedict aged 50 of Livingston was found dead at his residence at 1 pm by Charles Kotsman after entering upon not seeing smoke and noticing lights burning. A 92 caliber revolver lay near with a bullet hole in the forehead. Coroner Edward Mayvaon was notified. Benedict reportedly faced debts and has relatives in Kansas.

Christmas Mails Breaking Record At Local Post Office
One hundred seventy seven sacks of mail were sent out yesterday, over four times the daily average, with December 17 similar growth from last year. Christmas mail totals show about 25 percent more package mail and 76 percent more letters and postcards, and early December letters equal the entire December 1927 total. The post office will be closed all day on Christmas, while incoming special delivery letters and parcels will be handled as soon as possible. Many residents and visitors have crowded the office with bundles destined for states near the Atlantic and Pacific, California in particular, where many Edwardsville residents have relatives living.

Charles Brendle Learns of Sister's Death in St Louis
Charles Brendle received word this morning that his sister Mrs Mary Ann Brendle Ross died at 7 05 in St Louis from pneumonia and complications. A native of Edwardsville she lived in St Louis about forty years and is survived by son Edward two brothers Oscar of St Louis and Edward of Decatur and sister Miss Low Brendle of Decatur. Husband died about twenty years ago. Funeral arrangements not yet announced.
