Central Illinois coal fields see a rising strike with nearly 2,000 miners in Taylorville joining the action. National Guardsmen patrol near Springfield as deputy sheriffs and police guard mines and picket lines. No compromise seen, arrests expected, and troop requests possible as demonstrations unfold.
Clivazo Dee reports Charles M Schwab asserts that American business now dominates social and economic life. At the Illinois Manufacturing Association banquet Schwab says business, banking, industry and transportation are marshaled under the president to form the strongest peace time effort in history. Hoover policies aim to foster a new psychology and maintain balance across the business structure.
Madison County faced dense London fog last night causing difficult driving conditions until late morning. Temperature rose to 1 degree with high moisture in the soil, and drivers used horn warnings to pass safely. No serious accidents reported by Quadi son County Mutual Automobile Insurance Company.
Three Collinsville youths and an Edwardsville man were arrested in a wire theft scheme tied to junk sales. Charles Cony, 49, held on buying junk from a minor. Chartes Thomas, 17, charged with larceny. Curt Plummer, released after proving no involvement. Police say line-cut detection devices aid quick responses.
Miss Limina Baird, 1 year old, daughter of Mr and Mrs S Baird of Pin Oak Township, died at St Elizabeth's hospital in Granite City after an appendicitis operation. Born in Pin Oak, she attended local schools and worked at N C Nelson Manufacturing until her death following pneumonia. Funeral arrangements not yet made.
The Parerm-Teacher's Association began a milk program for grade school pupils. Each child receives a pint of milk and a graham cracker at recess for 15 cents weekly to help underweight children.
Judge W. DP. Marty of this city is a patient at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield receiving medical attention and will later undergo an operation.
Banks in Ed wardsville Collinsville Granite City and Madison will charge 50 cents a month for checking accounts with more than one check per month and low balances, while savings accounts remain free of service charges and continue to earn 3 percent interest. The policy, adopted with Alton Wood River and East Alton since 1927, aims to cover costs of small accounts, which banks say do not pay expenses.
Duncombe Illinois December 11 The Buncombe News Reporter weekly newspaper has appeared in town as Buncombe enters a building boom with a new stone quarry and several new structures recently erected.

The Madison County Board of Review announces a net $386,880 increase in taxable property after reviewing assessments. Wood River leads with $226,560 in gains, Venice and Nameoki follow. Alton township records the largest decrease at $100,000 due to the Alton St. Louis Bridge Co. property cut. Board members I L Coppinger Fred G. Lueders and Herman Juda signed the report.
After Thanksgiving football, the high school basketball team trains for the season with four of seven lettermen returning Capt Calvin Judd Paul Stolze Reno Tenor and George Moorman leading the squad. Graduates Daily Dale Schneider and Goff left. Schneider was ineligible. The full schedule was published last week.
Two County Ditch Levee and Drainage District commissioners met to discuss appointing a third member, likely Chris Hess, with appointment by County Judge Wilbur A. Traves. They plan a special assessment to raise about 20000 dollars for dirt removal and ditch opening to feed Project Eleven, while willow cutting for dredging progresses. Bids for dredging are to be opened in East St. Louis on December 30.

TE Miller president and W W McKee secretary of the Madison County Farm Bureau will return tomorrow from Chicago where they attended sessions of the American Farm Bureau Federation this week. Several thousand bureau members from across the United States participated in the Chicago meeting.
An evenly split jury was discharged by Judge Louis Bernreuter after a night of balloting in the murder trial of Ula Miller. Miller claimed self defense after her husband John Wesley Muller was killed last July. The case followed a previous deadlock in the Nellie Blum manslaughter trial. Attorney N W Parden, a prominent East St Louis negro lawyer, reflected on his career after the trial.
In fog four miles east of Shelbyville Alabama a head on collision killed Mrs Harry Wallace 26 of Windsor and injured four others. Her husband sustained cuts and bruises their 5 year old son fractured leg. Ernest Shadows 22 Windsor suffered head and neck cuts F O Hanbecker Sullivan driver of the other car had head lacerations.
The Illinois High School Athletic Association sponsors demonstration games statewide with Edwardsville as district 14 center. Dec 16 and Jan 6 games, district 14 covers six counties. W. W. Krumsick named district manager. Officials will demonstrate fouls and interpretations to reduce contact and stall tactics, with two teams prepared and a 250 cent fee to cover expenses. Public attendance invited.
Rioting broke out at Auburn Penitentiary in New York. One guard killed and warden Edgar Jennings held by prisoners. Principal keeper George Danforth killed. Seven or eight captives held by rioters for hours. State troops used tear gas to quell the riot. the riot leader was killed attempting escape. Greek president Paul Coundouriotis resigns in Athens.
