Walter Cassens of Hamel Dies
Funeral services are set for Walter Cassens 19 son of Mrs Jed Behrhorst near Hamel who died Sunday in St Louis. He suffered a scratch that led to blood poisoning and pneumonia. Born May 2 1942 he leaves his mother stepfather sister and grandmother. He was cousin to Ira Baumgartner of Worden who died in November in a railroad accident. Also noted is a minor fire at A J Wolfman’s house in Edwardsville extinguished by the fire department.

Man pleads guilty in manslaughter case at Belleville
Sam Turner, Venice Negro, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of John Smeltzer, a white man, in the Circuit Court before Judge Judson Crown. Turner received an indeterminate term of one to four years. The shooting followed an argument over a third man after Smeltzer visited Turner’s home. Other circuit orders included Mike Ganchotl fined $225 for liquor possession and Reuben Watts fined $50 for assault and battery.

Denied Right of Citizenship for Madison Applicant
Steve Levoicki of Madison was denied the right of American citizenship at a circuit court hearing. Naturalization Agent Kevin Clark testified Levoicki smuggled an alien brother into the United States from Windsor Canada in January 1900. The agent said Levoicki landed in Canada from Poland last winter and was rowed across the Detroit River to the United States, hid at his brother’s home for two weeks, and traces are now lost. Thirty six applications were heard. twenty five were approved.

John Weidner, rural mail carrier on Route 6 from Edwardsville post office, marked twenty five years in service yesterday. He covers 28 14 miles daily and may serve for 13 more years before pension unless disabled. Robert McCattery of New Douglas also has about 28 years in the business and is currently on leave after a recent stroke.

Enmiploves of the Tri City Taving Company hauled cinders today to fill wet spots east of Livingston in a bid to complete a road over which to transport material and finish the New Douglas Livingston highway. Youth re enacting murder scene ends in triple tragedy
A high school love story turned deadly at Roosevelt High. Constance Trobatos, 15, was killed by Joseph T. Wilson, 16, during a reenactment with an allegedly empty revolver. Earlier, Ruth Wicklund, 12, and Henry Sio, 16, died after Sio shot Wicklund and then killed himself.
