Election Day push helps Bender win 44th District race
In the 44th District state Senate contest Rick Bender of Bothell edged Jeanine Long 13,385 to 12,905 with as many as 2,250 absentee ballots yet to be counted. Bender credited a robust get out the vote effort and targeted campaigning, while Long cited smear mailings. In the 21st District Gary Nelson won re election to the Senate, defeating Don Gough as part of a GOP sweep including Katie Allen and John Beck winning their House seats.

Snohomish County approves 9-1-1 enhancement by wide margin
Snohomish County voters approve a 9-1-1 enhancement proposal by a three to one margin. Snohomish County officials say the upgrade will route calls to the proper agency, cut response time, and locate callers. The plan costs 1.1 million dollars annually, funded by a 50 cent monthly surcharge, with activation expected after sufficient funding.

Guilty verdict in shooting death of Kathleen McGunnigle
Dwight E. McGunnigle of Bothell was convicted of second degree murder for shooting his wife Kathleen McGunnigle during a July drive on Highway 99 near Lynnwood. After a five day trial, a seven to two jury returned the verdict in Snohomish County Superior Court, with McGunnigle planning to appeal. The couple had argued over the pistol prior to the shooting at close range. the defendant testified he could not recall firing the revolver and had been drinking. Kathleen was 28. A second degree murder conviction carries at least a ten year sentence in Washington.
