Republicans Hold State Convention in Lincoln Theatre
At the state convention of the Union Republican party of South Carolina held yesterday in the Lincoln theatre on Washington street Joseph W. Tolbert was reelected state chairman of the executive committee a party platform was adopted and many speeches claimed a brighter day for the party in the state. The convention endorsed Tolbert for United States marshal of the Western district of South Carolina and urged appointment by the judiciary committee and senate confirmation. Alethia Sweat the lone woman delegate from Dorchester attended and sat on the platform. The event featured strong praise for Tolbert and calls to unite white and black Republicans to grow the party. The roll call was led by H. H. Mobley with T. E. Lewis as assistant secretary. Temporary chair Ernest F. Cochran announced the convention personnel and delegates debated leadership and registration as the Republicans urged fair representation. Delegates from Edgefield included Milton S. Strother and W. G. Cutts with alternates M. A. Watson and W. Scott Stevens.
