Local items report Miss Royal Peak returning to Greeleyville while many Edgefield residents visit Greenwood and Columbia. Names include J. B. Kennerly, W. R. Swearingen, Eliza Gary, Mary Evans, Elise Lake, Nell Jones, Lallie Peak, Patti Major, Emmie and Grace Lanham, Ouida Pattison, and Miss Bessie Woodson, with campus, hospital, and Camp Jackson mentions.
The Advertiser thanks Miss Tempie Irene Timmerman for the invitation to the commencement exercises on Friday evening May 31. Miss Tempie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Timmerman, serves as president of the graduating class. Edgefield youths are urged to celebrate the achievement.

First and second rounds feature students Edwin Folk Annie Sue Broadwater Frances Jones William Gaines. Judges give their decision and a Thanksgiving blessing is offered by Annie May Culbreath.
Batesburg Cotton Oil Company highlights its Tip Top Top Dresser in a full page ad. The notice cites trusted farmers endorsing the fertilizer used for years with satisfactory results and notes it is manufactured and sold only by Batesburg Cotton Oil Company.
Ex Gov John C. Sheppard’s eldest son Wallace Sheppard has volunteered and been accepted for army YMCA work and will proceed abroad soon. His brothers J. O. Sheppard and Capt. Francis Sheppard are already in France as Edgefield follows daily dispatches of its young men heading to duty overseas.
The Addison Mills owners are praised for repeated generosity to war efforts. They contributed to the county Y M C A drive, and their local manager T A Hightower sent a $300 Red Cross subscription from Boston. Reliable reports indicate they own several mills and have subscribed $200,000 in Liberty Bonds.
Farmer concerns over a new rule limiting flour grinding to one month’s supply are eased by the State Food Administrator. He says country mills and small mills in the county can continue grinding wheat for farmers as before. The Washington modification will be announced in daily papers later this week. Harvest your wheat now.
Edisto Academy at Selvern six teen miles southeast of Batesburg prepared students for college and life on 275 acres with a hilltop campus. The closing exercises on April 25 featured a cantata Our Flag and a graduation with diplomas for three graduates of both sexes.
In May 1918 from Company E 37th Engineers at Fort Myer Virginia a letter details eight hour drills and preparations for France. A 100 man detachment from D and E marched in a Washington Red Cross parade with 20 000 white clad volunteers led by the Marine Band, watching crowds along Pennsylvania Avenue.
Edgefield county wide Red Cross drive shows strong patriotism with Johnston chapter receiving 1500 and surpassing 2500 raised. Edgefield chapter tally 3500 apportioned but 5741.52 contributed totaling over 8200 for the county. A total of 1252 contributors through the Edgefield chapter are recorded with full contributor lists to come in installments.
A new shipment of dresses has arrived featuring taf fetta, messaline, and crepedechine fabrics. Retail plans to display latest styles and fabrics for upcoming season.
Nashville records praise for Mr. Sykes president of Coker College delivering a history based address lauding Anglo American unity. Rev. W. H. Cannada and wife are lauded for shaping Edisto through faithful service. Brother Cannada shown as the right man in the right place at Edisto Academy.
Congressman J F Byrnes, speaking against the Selective Service Army Act on April 25, 1917, warned that conscription under the lottery would trigger domestic insurrection and rioting and hinder foreign war efforts. He asked whether voters would endorse these sentiments.
A cabbage weighing 19 pounds was cut from The Advetiser war garden. Grown on the coast and set out in November, the heads ranged from 8 to 12 pounds. The nineteen-pound monster was presented to Mr. W H Dorn and Mrs Dorn made seven quarts of pickle and served cabbage at dinner.
County Democratic executive committee assigns enrollment duties and campaign costs. Campaign event scheduled for Edgefield on July 4 with all pledges and assessments due beforehand. Listed per office amounts include House of Representatives 12.50 and coron er 2.50 among others.
