Memorial Day Observances and Local News Highlights

Memorial Day ceremonies were held with the Mary Ann Buie chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, flag decorated high school halls, and a speech by Dr. Pendleton Jones of Edgefield. A major cotton fire on Main Street tested local water shortages, while W C T U activities planned Jennie Cassedy's birthday observance and a county home luncheon.

Memorial Day Observed by Edgefield U D C

Edgefield chapter of the U D C held Memorial Day observances on May 10 with about 30 Confederate veterans invited to dinner at the Baptist church. A program at the cemetery featured orator Haddon Johnson arguing Jefferson Davis deserves greater historical honor. A Shiloh monument fund collection followed, and Johnson donated expenses back to the fund. Graves and the public square monument were decorated.

Death of Mrs E W Samuel at Edgefield home

Mrs E W Samuel died Wednesday morning after a lengthy illness. Reared in Kersville Georgia she moved to Edgefield about 19 years ago. She was a devout Methodist. Funeral held Wednesday at 5 pm from the Methodist church with Rev A L Gunter officiating. Interment in the village cemetery. Survived by husband a son about 12 and a daughter eight.

Edgefield School Letter Debates Mexico Policy

The McDuttie literary society meets Friday afternoon May 12 with current events read by Edith Outts and a piano solo by Margaret May. A debate on punitive expedition into Mexico ends with a negative decision by judges Fred Mays Genevieve Norris and Mr Lyon, then adjournment follows. Mamie Broadwater from Johnston visits Monday.

Red Hill School Celebrates New Building and Governor Manning Visit

A large crowd of about 1500 gathered for Red Hill’s Red Letter Day highlighting the new two story school building and a visit by Governor Richard S. Manning. Speakers included W. W. Fuller and P. N. Lott praising education, soil building, and rural progress.

Lott School Picnic Reflects Rural Community Pride

The Lott school on a hillside near the Timmerman homestead hosted a sprawling community event. About 75 children attended daily, taught by Prof Wise and Miss Daisy Lyon, with patrons praising the two educators and considering another term. The Saturday picnic featured speeches by local candidates and a generous dinner under the oaks, strengthening old ties and forming new ones.

Edgefield Cotton Mill Sale Reported in Greenville

Parker Cotton Mills Company directors decide to sell the Hampton group of eight mills for just under 3 million dollars. Lockwood Greene & Co of New York purchase the mills including Granby Olympia Richland Capital City Wylie Pine Creek Beaver Dam and Fairfield with about 275000 spindles. Hampton group to be delivered June 26. creditors to receive 70 percent cash and 30 percent in preferred stock.

Memorial Service At Sweetwater Church Marked By Attendance

The second annual memorial service at Sweetwater church drew nearly double last year’s crowd as Governor Manning spoke on duty to God and neighbor. Deacon John Mathews, 82, received three mahogany chairs for 50 years of service, with Manning departing by noon to catch the Augusta Special.
