Memorial Day Observed by Edgefield U D C
Edgefield chapter of the U D C held Memorial Day observances on May 10 with about 30 Confederate veterans invited to dinner at the Baptist church. A program at the cemetery featured orator Haddon Johnson arguing Jefferson Davis deserves greater historical honor. A Shiloh monument fund collection followed, and Johnson donated expenses back to the fund. Graves and the public square monument were decorated.

Death of Mrs E W Samuel at Edgefield home
Mrs E W Samuel died Wednesday morning after a lengthy illness. Reared in Kersville Georgia she moved to Edgefield about 19 years ago. She was a devout Methodist. Funeral held Wednesday at 5 pm from the Methodist church with Rev A L Gunter officiating. Interment in the village cemetery. Survived by husband a son about 12 and a daughter eight.

Parker Cotton Mills Company directors decide to sell the Hampton group of eight mills for just under 3 million dollars. Lockwood Greene & Co of New York purchase the mills including Granby Olympia Richland Capital City Wylie Pine Creek Beaver Dam and Fairfield with about 275000 spindles. Hampton group to be delivered June 26. creditors to receive 70 percent cash and 30 percent in preferred stock.

The second annual memorial service at Sweetwater church drew nearly double last year’s crowd as Governor Manning spoke on duty to God and neighbor. Deacon John Mathews, 82, received three mahogany chairs for 50 years of service, with Manning departing by noon to catch the Augusta Special.
