Edgefield church notes resume weekly prayer meetings at the Methodist church each Thursday. A letter from an Edgefieldian in Texas is omitted due to space. Children’s Day services with dinner and both morning and afternoon sessions are planned at Harmony next Sunday, expected to be a pleasant day. The South Carolina Supreme Court delays in the school bond case draw concern over Edgefield’s educational and commercial welfare.
Fatra Texas farming notes from May 5 1908 discuss rain needed to aid early cotton planting stalled by cool winds and crusted soil. Corn bud worm damage in wet areas, more corn planted than usual, oats poor, no wheat due to threshing and mill access. Sorghum molasses for meals praised, molasses costs high, home production favored. Critically ill Old Bro. George Dorn noted.
A reader recounts two odd incidents to the editor. One tale reports terrapins seized from Big Turkey Creek in a barrel, another describes a neighbor sitting on a lime barrel and becoming trapped by nails, illustrating Quaker-tinged humor and local mischief.
The town reports vegetables thriving despite cold with berries and asparagus strong. Visitors include Mr. James Miller and family, Mrs. Lizzie T. Smyley, and Frank T. Richardson. About midnight Thursday an alarm woke residents as a fire burned the barn and outhouse of Allen Harris a colored man living near the depot. The dwelling was saved by the quick actions of the fire department. Mrs Rebecca Jones has returned to Edgefield and hopes to stay through summer. She seeks to teach an art embroidery class and has shown remarkable handwork.
