Rebuilding Orphanage Under Way After Fire Losses

Clinton Special notes two buildings at Thornwell Orphanage destroyed by fire last November. Donations funded immediate relief and a rebuilding plan. Eldridge Fowler cottage and kitchen, a large brick 70 by 60 foot structure costing about $3,000, will house girls and include storage, dairy and cooking areas. Dining will occur in cottages with separate kitchens. Memorial Hall, a granite building, will be rebuilt on its old lines as a learning and feeding space. A spring plan may also form a water power project at Cherokee shoals on the Savannah River to serve nearby manufacturers, potentially yielding 6,000 to 18,000 horsepower.

Killed on Reedy River Trestle in Greenville

James Burgess watchman at Carolina Mills was instantly killed on the Reedy River trestle by Southern Railway train No 36 from Atlanta. Burgess lived in American Spinning Company's village and was returning home from work. A sharp curve near the junction prevented the engineer from seeing the trestle in time.
