Terrible disaster at New Orleans steam boat Marquette explosion
A devastating explosion aboard the steam boat Marquette near Poydras street yesterday afternoon killed many and injured others. The vessel blew apart as it backed from the wharf, shattering the hull and scattering bodies across the area. The death toll remains unconfirmed with passengers unregistered and several deck travelers missing. Eighteen were in Charity Hospital and one in Dr. Stones. A separate violent shooting in Greenville, South Carolina, left Robert Headden mortally wounded. Dexter Wells is under arrest after the assault.

Postmasters Restricted on Subscriptions and Franks
New regulation bans postmasters from sending money to printers via franks. Money up to ten dollars may be left with a postmaster for distant publishers if desired, with the postmaster taking one percent and issuing a receipt for the balance. He will forward the balance to the publisher where payable, deducting another one percent. No packet over eight pounds may be mailed or purchased, except books sent by state governors.
Planters urged to attend Newberry Agricultural Meeting
