Monument Erected in North Augusta for McKie Meriwether

A granite monument stands in Calhoun square North Augusta to McKie Meriwether who died in July 1876 during the Hamburg riot. Ex-Gov John C Sheppard chaired the unveiling with D S Henderson delivering remarks about liberty and Reconstruction. The ceremony recalled Hamburg Edgefield and honored Meriwether as a patriot and symbol of South Carolina’s past battles.

Johnston Girl Wins Second Prize In Essay Contest

The United Daughters of the Confederacy awarded a $25 prize for the best peace essay. Miss Bessie Bean of Johnston High School was the standout South Carolina entrant and earned honorable mention as the second prize winner.
