Election last Thursday to fill the DeLaughter vacancy drew little interest with turnout under half of last summer’s primary. Commissioners announced results: J. L. Walker 450 votes, M. P. Fatal Tree Fall Claims Hugh Byrd on Gilgal Farm
Hugh Byrd, 22, was killed on his Gilgal farm when a second felled tree toppled onto him as he supervised woodland clearing. He died about four hours later. A member of a large Byrd family, he was laid to rest Thursday at Gilgal Church with Rev. P. B. Lanham officiating.
