Red Cross Meeting to Organize New Edgefield Chapter
A meeting to formally organize an Edgefield chapter of the American National Red Cross will be held in the court house Friday at 2 30 o clock. Patriotic addresses and officer elections are planned with public enrollment urged. Membership is one dollar. Sarah R Collett chairs the League for Woman's Service.

Edgefield County 4-H Clubs Open to Farm Boys
Edgefield county boys ages ten to eighteen on farms may join the corn or pig club or both. County agent W. E. Stokes asks interested boys to send name and address to the Edgefield office within two weeks. Also urged are home orchard projects, tree planting, nursery contacts, pruning and San Jose scale remedies, and lime application to prepare sour land for next season.

Rufus Hart a married Edgefield man employed at M L Kinard store was arrested yesterday on charges of willfully making false statements to interfere with US military service and obstructing recruitment. An affidavit by a DOJ representative says Hart disparaged the country the flag and the president and claimed drafting was unfair favoring the rich. Bail set at 3000 for a December 12 preliminary hearing at 4 PM.

Warning to Merchants on Sugar Prices in Sumter 1917
The Sumter Item reports a warning from the United States Food Administration advising merchants, both wholesale and retail, that charging 12½ to 12¾ cents per pound for sugar is excessive and may violate food laws. The letter from Joes Sparks notes the 12½ cent rate is cited as unlawful pending a county food administrator appointment.
