He searches pockets and desk, faces a suspected loss and seeks who is responsible.
A Detroit Free Press account details a complex theft at Dockfelt & Thomas. Detective Garner unravels a chemical method used by shipping clerk Charles Hurst to steal money, expose love triangles, and reveal Hurst and Thomas’s guilt while exonerating the innocent Fred Thomas. The scheme collapses. Hurst is exposed and dismissed, and Thomas wins the heart of the woman he loves.
A Baltimore report details a Johns Hopkins University demonstration where water in a pail can be boiled by five hours of constant rapid stirring with a wooden paddle. Professor Ames uses the trick to illustrate the mechanical equivalent of heat and how work raises water temperature, a result noted alongside other energy examples from the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune.
