Dastardly Crime Near Augusta Ends in Death

Two Red Hill farmers, W L Collins and Geo Wood, were attacked near Fox's Creek on the Martintown road after leaving Augusta. A mulatto with a revolver demanded money, Collins was killed, Wood wounded in the hip, then both pursued the killers. The governor is urged to offer a large reward and swift punishment is demanded to deter such criminals.

Assassination Shock in Cold Spring Town News

The Cold Spring letter reports the daylight assassination attempt on Mr. George Wood near Augusta and the death of Mr. W. L. Collins, a widower aged about 50. Collins was buried at Red Hill with many mourners. he is described as a patriotic citizen. Magistrate L. G. Bell is named and court routines noted. a governor’s reward is urged for the killers.
