Local notes report births and marriages, business changes, and community events in Eau Claire. A Barstow street hatter welcomes a baby. several firms announce partnerships and relocations, plus civic items include a street railway plan and a new Unity Church incorporation.
Thomas Quirk of Valley Lumber, Smiths Camp near Bruce, was killed Saturday afternoon when a log rolled from a sleigh he helped lead and struck the back of his neck. His body was brought to the city Sunday evening and buried Monday at his brother’s home in Union. He was about thirty and left no family.
The Monday skating event drew over a thousand spectators as Axel Paulson, Overgaard and Miss May Davidson showcased expert performances. The wave-mile race ended with Paulson first in 5 minutes 63 seconds, followed by local skaters Wim Sorenson and John Agnuonson. A banquet at the Frawley House honored the skaters with toasts from Ald. Thompson and Dr. Graff, plus musical entertainment.
On March 25 the edurer signs will open a business college dubbed the College of Commerce in Horan's hall opposite the Frawley house. Shorthand typewriting English and German will be taught with a 20 percent reduction for men and 80 percent for ladies during the first two weeks. A live school for live business men by Howrison and Sroun, proprietors.
