Progress Report on Prairie Chicken Refuge Work North of Eagle Lake
Howard Degen director of the Texas Wildlife office in Houston reports on Altwater's Prairie Chicken refuge near Eagle Lake. Improvements remain underway and the area is closed to the public though interested persons may visit by appointment with the caretaker Tom T Wardell. Observations note above average rainfall, abundant winter food for birds, and two plots totaling about 2000 acres set aside to allow native plant recovery with minimal disturbance. Food plots include peas and grain to sustain winter needs, with grazing reduced by a third and one fifth of adjacent land planted with grain. Financing has nearly reached completion and officials aim to raise awareness of the refuge's historic aesthetic and conservation value.
