A historical overview notes Portuguese, British, and Italian influence on Ethiopia, from early maritime missions to 19th century power plays. It covers colonial pressures, massawa and Eritrea, Menelik II, and the British Abyssinia crisis leading to forced withdrawal and shifting alliances.
Ethiopian forces under Menelik faced Italian assault at Aduwa near Makale as Italy advanced with four brigades on March 1. Ethiopian losses ranged around 4,600 killed and wounded, plus 2,500 to 3,000 prisoners, with Ethiopians fleeing to regroup as Italian forces sought a decisive victory. The conflict influenced later territorial debates and independence arrangements, shaping regional power dynamics into the late 19th century.
Rev A W Luce recounts the Sultan area incident in which Frank Mashburn, a young farmer, shot at a vicious police dog attacking his cattle. The dog wrested his pistol from his grip, the bullet struck Mashburn’s leg, but he survived and is recovering as a tractor case.
