Garwood Lions Plan Charter Night Next Monday

About 200 guests are expected for the Garwood Lion Club charter night at eight o clock on Monday May 12 in the Garwood school gym. First County War Casualty Returning Home

The body of Second Lieutenant Leon P. Kallinn of the US Army Air Force, son of Frank J. Kallina of Garwood, is among 2024 American war dead to be returned from Hongluli aboard the Cardinnal O'Connell. Arrival will be announced by the San Francisco Port of Embarkation. next of kin will be notified in advance. Distribution centers will take 10 days to three weeks after ship arrival to advise families of dates for war dead.

Walter Kessler Seriously Injured In Road Accident

Walter Lee Kessler, son of Me and Mrs Wm Kessler, was seriously injured Sunday afternoon near Victoria while riding a motorcycle returning to work in Plaveds after a weekend visit. Tuan T Jering, arrested for failure to stop and aid, reportedly caused the crash. Kessler sustained a badly injured arm and hip and a bloody lip requiring six stitches. His employer Excel Smith was in Victoria and expects the arm to be set Monday. hospital discharge is anticipated soon barring complications. The Victoria Motorcycle Club and local residents have offered support and flowers during his hospital stay.

Former Headlight staffer Beatrice Calburn dies in Houston area

AB Winzenried attended services for his aunt Beatrice Winfree Calburn 69 who died en route to Houston hospital while visiting. Colburn formerly worked for Headlight. Raymond Winfree also served under editor Bruce W. McCarty. Survived by three sons, two daughters, a brother four sisters and grandchildren. Funeral 2:00 pm Thursday at First Methodist Texas City with Rev. Ervin Jackson officiating. Burial at Galveston Memorial Park.

Commissioners Court Adopts Knight Care Contract For County Farm

Colorado County Commissioners met Monday to approve a contract with Joe Knight to care for inmates at the county farm at 20 per person monthly, canceling a prior 30 rate after grand jury criticisms. Three bids for inmate care were reviewed, Knight chosen after farm inspection. Rudolph Balzar bid 25 and Mrs. Fred W. Bunge 28. The court did not finalize plans for a permanent Jumto House. Judge Buescher plans a future structure. A motor grader was purchased from Benson Tractor and Hiway Equipment bid 20 666 10 for a similar device. Columbus Votes To Annex Freisburg School District

The Freisburg and surrounding districts voted on joining Columbus Independent School District in an election held Thursday. Columbus tally reached 987 for annexation with 100 against, while Freisburg opposed by 102 to 37 and Zimmerscheidt by 37 to 4. Weimar and Galtland also weighed in with favorable and opposing splits respectively. Oakland opposed 28 to 17. Local officials noted the county school board would canvass the results.
