Shell Rice School Dist Agreement On Tax Valuations
The Rice Consolidated Independent School District and Shell Oil Company reached an agreement on property valuations for tax purposes. Shell provided data supporting a 33 percent market value assessment, noting that Sheridan Unit assets would be valued separately. District officials and Shell executives discussed earlier depreciation and a potential $3 million drop from prior valuation levels, with 1973 estimates around $42.3 million. Roadblocks include Sheridan plant depreciation considerations and ongoing effort to set total assessed value, which may fall by about $2.5 to $3 million despite new revenue and construction. Shell indicated tax payments may be delayed to aid early-year district funding.

Round 2 Of County Shell Battle July 2
Colorado County Commissioners Court opens round two of the Shell Oil case over Sheridan Unit valuations. Shell argues market values fall from 51.9 million in 1972 to 37 million, while the county says other property should be assessed on the same ratio. The court will defend its position next Monday as the tax assessor notes anticipated valuation drops due to homestead exemptions for seniors and county tax relief measures. New rural land improvements and per acre increases are expected to offset some declines.
