Rest for overworked county agents and a sharp joke tale
An old anecdote praises farm agents for hard work amid flawed 1938 crop acts and endless delays. A North Carolina agent recalls a farmer’s death over a disputed payment and a Treasury reply about hellish months handling allotments. A punchline about a customer who insists he is wrong ends the piece, underscoring agent patience and humor.

Julius Caesar Doesn’t Know If He Is Lucky or Not
The Hallettsville Tribune reports on Jack Caesar of the city, nicknamed Julius for his stature in the colored community, facing a string of misfortunes. His home burned twice, he was indicted for perjury with a mistrial, his daughter Lizzie Caesar was fatally shot, and his cousin Willie’s electric chair sentence was commuted to life. Caesar, awaiting further blows, muses on happiness between married and single life in a wry, quoted remark.
