State Increases School Per Capita by 3 Million
Texas public schools will receive an additional 3 million dollars in per capita apportionment. The state Board of Education met in Austin and approved the extra allotment for the fiscal year ending August 31, based on a anticipated 3.383 million balance. The 3 million supplement means a per capita payment this year, with next year’s per capita set at 30 and earmarked for textbook purchases. The 35 cent tax rate will be set by the automatic tax board meeting in July, replacing the previous 18 cent rate. The board also endorsed state efforts to defend submerged lands against federal claims, urging Congress to establish state ownership and prevent federal water claims that would harm the permanent school fund. Last year’s per capita was projected at 45,675,612 entering the available school fund. There are about 1,500,000 children of school age in Texas. The apportionment means 30 dollars per child for next year in the district, with possible surplus leading to a supplemental payment up to the 20 dollar high mark if revenues exceed estimates.
