Southwestern Bell plans 75 million Houston area build program
Southwestern Bell Telephone Company will spend about 75 million on new construction in the Houston area from 1968 to serve growing business and residential customers. The plan increases 1966-67 building by about 12 million, with 5.4 million allotted for new buildings and additions in 1988. The Houston area employs over 8,200 with a payroll around 61 million. about 1.4 million phones are in service, plus 103,000 more expected this year. Total Texas construction costs will exceed 242 million for the year. The company paid 49.2 million in state taxes and 120.5 million in federal taxes from Texas earnings.
