Telephone Installer Wins Hero Award
Charles Rider of Guthrie Oklahoma, a telephone lineman, earned the Gold Vale Medal in a 1904 program for heroism shown during a train wreck. Despite a chronic illness and warnings against wind and dust, he braved fire and flood to aid others and restore lines. The award, part of the Theodore N. Vail Memorial Fund, honors his public service with the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
