Progress in Screwworm Eradication Pushes Barrier Plan
The program disperses sterile screwworm flies over 73 000 square miles in Texas 7000 in New Mexico and 10000 along the Mexico border. About 77 576 450 flies were distributed last week with roughly half males. A huge rearing facility near Mission funds the effort and plans extend the barrier to the border from Brownsville to the NM AZ line. If weather allows the barrier should be complete by February 15 1963 with an expected 50 million sterile flies weekly. Farmers urged to report infestations and send samples to Mission for mapping.
