Texas Trail Riders set for 140 mile ride to San Antonio

About 300 members of the Texas Trail Riders will depart Skull Creek Ranch near Altair at 6 00 Sunday Feb 5 for a four and a half day 140 mile journey to join the opening of the San Antonio Seventh Annual Livestock Exposition. They will begin at Altair 3 00 pm Saturday with a barbecue supper at 5 30 pm entertainment by Adolph Hofner and the Pearl Wranglers. Ed Johnson heads the group with Elbert Tait and Lester Bunge in top posts. Dues are 5 00 for non riders and 3 00 for horseback riders. The riders will rest outdoors and sleep in wagons, stopping for meals and events in Shines Gonzales and Seguin.

Local Art Class Forms AAAA Eagle Lake Chapter

The January 1956 Amateur Artist issue notes a new Eagle Lake Texas chapter of the Amateur Artists Association of America with charter members listed. Instructor Mrs R L Lange connected with Leslie T Henson of La Grange. two weekly classes run at 3 pm and 7 pm at the Elementary School. Henson, a London native, is an accomplished artist offering portraits and landscapes while teaching in several nearby towns. The chapter invites others to join and participate in future exhibits. Charter members include Mrs J N Fragar, Mrs R L Lange, Mrs A J Struss, Mrs E F Munford, Mrs J A P McNiel, Mrs Lonnie Briscoe, Mrs Clara Mae Nash, Mr and Mrs Alvin Wiese, George Nicholds, and Gerald Birdwell.

Sheriff Walker Seeks Re election In Colorado County

Colorado County Sheriff J C Boyche Walker announces candidacy for re election under the Democratic Primary in July. He notes three terms served and thanks friends for past support while inviting continued backing for another term. Rice Theatre Door Tampered and No Entry Found

Glass in the Rice Theatre side door was broken during the early hours of Wednesday. Chief Cliff Benson reported evidence suggests a person tried to break out to gain entry but fled before a robbery occurred. Owner H Johnson said investigation found nothing missing and no one inside.

Penalty Assessed On City and School Taxes

Penalty now added to city and school tax assessments for late payments as of February 1. Penalties range from 1.1 to 13.45 percent for yearly totals. W C Reet reports 97 percent of 1956 year taxes collected by deadline, up from 98.3 percent last year. City Manager P V Werner notes city collections are good but below the school district. county ad valorem and state taxes also due by February 1.

Poll Tax Vote Eligibility Dips From 1952 Total

Colorado County Tax Assessor Henry Hajovaky reports a preliminary count of 5090 eligible voters for the 1956 election, with 5010 paying poll taxes and 80 exempt. This is 476 fewer than the 5556 who qualified in 1952. Final tallies await mail arrivals postmarked by January 31, as W C Reed notes 79 payments in the final payment week.

Dogs Vaccinated At City Hall Clinic In City

About 123 dogs received rabies and puppy shots during a three day clinic at City Hall last weekend. Officials note last year 204 dogs were inoculated and remind owners to vaccinate and renew 1956 registration tags to avoid pickup and impound.

County Valuation Tripled During Past 10 Years

Valuation of Colorado County more than tripled from 1945 to 1955 with a $30 million rise. Tax Assessor Henry Hajovsky reports growth in assessed wealth and dramatic increases in office fees and vehicle licensing revenue. In 1945 the office had five deputies and $9,101.92 in service fees. by 1956 six deputies earned $14,145.15. Vehicle licenses show 4,798 sales in 1945 totaling $59,960.92, and by Jan 21, 1956 licenses reached 9,093 with $171,503.84 collected. State shares and county shares of license fees are detailed, with partial year figures for current year.

Saturday Last Day To Order Pival Rat Bait

Countywide rat control program offers pival rat and mouse bait at cost. County Agent Dayle L. Moore warns orders must be placed by Saturday at bait stations to ensure supply. Bait will be distributed from San Antonio and packaged locally for delivery to stations for pickup on February 5 and 16.

Rice Farmers Approve 1956 Marketing Quotas in Referendum

Colorado County rice producers joined national approval of the 1956 marketing quotas with 147 yes to 33 no out of 180 votes. Proportions exceeded the three fifths threshold. Nationwide approval stood around 84 percent as Eagle Lake and Garwood had mixed results and Columbus was unanimous.

Columbus Man Killed in Affray. Elman Held on Murder Charge

A Columbus man, Robert Henry Hargrove, 34, was fatally shot Sunday at Cleve Norman's Cafe in Columbus after an argument over a five dollar change. James Lightfoot, 85, Eagle Lake Negro, was arrested and later charged with murder. Lightfoot surrendered a .32 caliber pistol. he claims self defense, saying Hargrove threatened him. The incident occurred as Lightfoot left Eagle Lake in a car with Willie Meyers Jr. The case awaits grand jury review next spring. Hargrove died en route to Veterans Hospital in Houston.

Strauss to retire from Texas Senate after decade of service

Senator Gus J. Strauss of Halattsville says he will not seek reelection to the 13th Senatorial District. He recently discharged from San Antonio Hospital after treatment for organic complications. He plans a full rest and return to private law practice, pledged to aid constituents while able.

Grand Jury Opens Spring Term District Court Monday

The spring term of District Court starts Monday with Judge Lester Holt empaneling a grand jury and setting civil dockets for trials. The grand jury faces a light workload due to few capital crime charges since September. The civil docket lists 123 cases with eleven for trial before juries, 46 nonjur y cases and 66 divorces.

License Plates Now On Sale in Colorado County

Colorado County Tax Officer Neney Hajovsky announced 1956 license plates go on sale February 1 with nearly a hundred sets issued. The first auto license went to J. W. Schoeliman of Garwood, license FZ 10, and 5790 passenger plates were issued, with ranges FZ10 to P2849 and FY7350 to F9995. About 3690 commercial truck licenses cover 110 to 11649 and TX0950 to MSHST. 1090 farm truck licenses cover FRO to SReIs. Also 75 truck tractor, 27 farm truck tractor, 400 trailers, 30 house trailers, 50 motorcycles, 30 dealers plates issued. Hajovsky and deputies will sell plates in Eagle Lake in February, then return in March. Deadline is April 1, 1956.
