New Year Celebrations and Local Happenings at Eagle Lake
On January 2 1926 Eagle Lake residents welcomed the new year with pistol salutes and church bells. Helmer Seaholm reportedly fired the loudest gun with a charge of dynamite black powder and TNT. A cornerstone laying for Christ Episcopal Church drew a large crowd despite inclement weather, aided by Rev. C S Quin of Houston. A fire destroyed L H Obenhuus’s double barn near Nedra. Santa Claus brought air guns to homes, sparking an air gun parade of sparrows and electric lights. A new community hatchery is opening, and a cold snap with sleet and snow affects travel. Frank Bertetti visited from Beald Illinois to review business interests and a highway project near the Bertetti ten acres. Alderman G E Thomas and family visit Temple, and Lt Duncan pays fines for hunting without a license during a Wharton county hunt. Local Boy Scouts attend Christmas camp at Henry Burttschell ranch, with several leaders and a Freehold intermann paying a visit. Henry E Fraka, Austin College senior, returns home after a football season, having played with a broken nose and shoulder and joined the final game versus Texas Christian University. Oscar Wintermann’s Lakeside Irrigation Company secures an electric current for pumping at Lakeside plants. Ninth graders host a parish house “top” night with Victrola music and many local youths in attendance.
