Social Security Chief Explains Quarters for Retirement Benefits
Fred C. Rogers of the Tronstan Social Security office explains that 40 calendar quarters are not required for all claimants reaching age 63 to be eligible for retirement checks. A quarter must have at least $50 in wages earned within that three month period. The act, effective January 7, 1937, notes that older workers need fewer quarters the earlier they qualify, with example figures and insured status at age 65.
